I loved reading Neil Gaiman's Stardust which has now materialized into a movie.
Neil's choice of words and storytelling technique is smooth and easy and sometimes unpredictable that I find myself captivated in the little fantasy world he has created in his stories.
This story is a fantasy-adventure story set in London-Below revolving around Richard Mayhew, a rather boring guy from London-Above who found himself trapped unwillingly in the world of London-Below when he, out of the goodwill of his heart, helped a girl terribly hurt on a sidewalk one night. By the next morning, Richard was invisible to London-Above and only existed to those in London-Below.
Door, the girl who was hurt or as the story progressed, Lady Door, turned out to be someone special in London-Below and she was hunted by two very sadistic hitmen, Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar, with rather dark sense of humour about their job of which they get great pleasure from.
In a nutshell, Door's family were all killed in a plot to obtain a Key that will open the door to Heaven. Door was spared since the Key can only be open by an Opener and she was it. It turned out that the "person" who wanted the Key was an angel-turned-bad - Angel Islington - who caused the destruction of Atlantis and as punishment, was locked up until he has earned forgiveness. He was not going to wait that long and decided to take matters in his own hands and not only that, plan to wreck havoc in Heaven once he gain access into it.
Though the set up and storyline is quite dark I found myself actually sniggering out loud, a lot, through this book. The comedic anecdotes are really funny! I like!
