latest read - memoirs of an imaginary friend
I bought this at a whim.
The back sleeve reads "For readers who love Room and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time: ...".
I have read both books and enjoyed them both especially Room, so that was the deciding factor.
It's a wonderful book seen from a perspective of a child's imaginary friend called Budo. The child, a boy called Max Delaney, has I believe some form of autism since his word revolved inside himself and he has difficulties with socializing with other children or any other person for that matter.
In the story, he is tricked into following a teacher whose main objective is to actually kidnap him and raise him as her child since she lost her own little boy. Since Max is so easily enticed by toys and video games and being on his own in his world, he does not put up a fight or even know the difference.
While I was reading this, two things came to mind:
1. What a great movie this would make if we get the right people to do it like Peter Jackson possibly since he has a great team that can make the imaginary world and the real world coincide and look authentic. It would be really great to "see" this story unfold.
2. Every parent need to read this. It is the people that you trust that normally betray you. The story shows how easily children are tricked to follow a person. They are so innocent and naive that they trust whatever that is being told to them. That thought scares me very much and I keep thinking of my precious niece whom I would die for. It scares me very much. Parents need to really read this book.
